I haven't been using ILWIS for very long, but it has already been very useful for my project. The project is a process to analyze satellite imagery to detect changes in vegetation over time. This process would normally be done with expensive products such as ERDAS Imagine, IDRISI, or ArcGIS. However, with the scripting feature of ILWIS, I have written scripts to automate large parts of the analysis process. I can now perform the process completely for free using ILWIS 3.6, MultiSpec, MS Excel, and free Landsat imagery published by the USGS (http://glovis.usgs.gov).
The most exciting part of this project for me is that by using FREE GIS tools and data, it can be adopted much more easily by researchers and workers in government offices, NGOs, or researchers with very low budgets.
I hope that I will be able to become a member of the ILWIS developer community soon so that I can contribute bug fixes and improvements that would allow my entire analysis process to be streamlined and done with only ILWIS (so there is no need to use MultiSpec nor Excel). _________________ US Peace Corps Volunteer, GIS Specialist
