TEACH YOURSELF ILWIS

Congratulations, this is your opportunity to become a GIS specialist in no more than a few weeks by carrying out these exercises

There are several guides for ILWIS. Some very elaborate guides with lots of case studies and exercises have been made for ILWIS 2. They work fine with ILWIS 3 and you should download them as reference material. 

The files are in pairs: the ones on the left are instruction document in .pdf format; the ones on the right are zipfiles with data for the exercises. You should download them in pairs. Then create a directory for each file with the same name as the file. That way you keep all data belonging to one exercise in the same directory. If you mix data of different exercises you will get very confused. In each directory, you should extract the data from the zip file into that directory. 

The ILWIS 2.1 Beginner's Guide (38 pp.) and the ILWIS Quick Introduction have been designed for new ILWIS users and will give you a first impression of ILWIS. Try both the ILWIS 2.1 and 3.1 quick introductions, as they work both for ILWIS 3.  If you are new to ILWIS, and scared, just try it and you will be amazed how easy it is, and FUN too! For years I was scared of this magical stuff called GIS. Stuff that could only be managed by computer wizkids, right? End 1998, I was working with a bunch of thoze wizkids and did not have a clue what they were doing and talking about. Then a friend of mine told me about ILWIS and suggested me to go through the Quick introduction. I could not believe how simple it was! Was that all? If you are new to this, just try it for a couple of hours. It is really fun and will change your outlook on GIS and resource management forever. HAVE FUN!

If you are a beginner, we suggest you download them both. The beginner's Guides introduces you to the basic ILWIS functions and applications, such as the Main window, display of maps and tables, and using pixel info; it contains some simple GIS and Image Processing exercises such as Filter, Color Composite, and Cross; and it shows you how to use some annotation. For more elaborate exercises, please refer to the the main training files. If you are serious however about wanting to master ILWIS, you must dedicate at least half a day to it for a period of several weeks. GIS is not like learning an office suite. It is a scientific programme, with scientific concepts. So you must do some serious reading and studying of the principles. ENJOY :)

Tenemos documentos en español para la versión 2.1. que también sirven muy bien para la versión 3. 

Ojo, los archivos están presentados en parejas. Al lado izquierda están los documentos de instrucción en formato .pdf. Al lado derecho se hallan los archivos zip con los datos para los ejercicios. Tienes que bajarlos en parejas. Despues, tienes que hacer un directorio para cada pareja con su nombre parecido. Eso es para evistar que mezclas los datos, lo que te puede confundir facilmente. En el nuevo directorio tienes que extraer los archivos del zip file y meterlos en el nuevo directorio. 

La Introducción es un documento que te ayuda familiarizarte con ILWIS. En el pasado, yo estaba muy temeroso de todo que se trataba de SIG. En 1998 estaba trabajando con un grupo de magos SIG y no tenía ningún idea que estaban haciendo. Un colega mío me recomendó tratar de familiarizarme un poco con SIG, usando ILWIS. Entonces, usé esta introducción y estaba muy sorprendido que SIG no estaba nada magico y en realidad bastante manejable. Desde entonces, comencé a profundizar mis habilidades según mis necesidades proprias y poco a poco me desarrollé como un esperto en mapeo de ecosistemas! Entonces, te recomiendo que por lo menos haces un esfuerzo con este documentito "Introducción" y que juegas unas horas, familiarizandote con ILWIS. Te garantizo, que eso te cambiarará tu visión sobre SIG y manejo de recursos para siempre! DISFRUTE!

El segundo documento trata de los capítulos 1 - 6, que incluye los temas más importantes para poder trabajar en ILWIS. Por lo menos en parte se puede usar los datos de los capítulos 1 -6 del curso de ILWIS 3. Si juegas medio dia con cada capítulo, ya podras manejar SIG de forma básica en no más de 2 semanas.
